THE BOMFORDS OF WORCESTER

About Bomford arms and crests

This family tree was started by Frances Emily Bomford b 1873 d 1959. She passed it to Christopher Heming Bomford, her nephew, b 1911. In 2001, he gave it to his son Peter Heming Bomford b 1941.

There is a concise version of this tree, which has the genealogical information but omits the historical and biographical detail.

Contributions have been made by many members of the family.  Information also came from a search of the IGI (the International Genealogical Index, made available by the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; numbers such as c074851 in the text generally refer to IGI entries), with a bit of guesswork as to marriages.  Other valuable sources are freebmd (an index of births, marriages and deaths in the UK) and familyhistoryonline, which has the 1881 census plus many other Bomford records.

The tree has been available in several forms. As a diagram, it occupies several sheets of paper, totalling about three metres wide by 0.8 metres high. About seventy copies were circulated in this form in the 1970s. An extract from an early typed and handwritten tree is attached.  The tree has been converted to an electronic database, as a GED file (right click on the link and select Save Target As or similar to save it to your computer.  It will not open properly using an internet browser, but it can be read (sort of) with a text editor and can be opened properly with software such as FamilyTreeMaker, or FamilyTreeMaker starter edition, a free 16MB download). The trees on this internet site were derived from Peter Bomford's original tree, with additional information from Kim Bomford, and have been updated since 2005 with information provided by members of the family and others interested in it.

Four digit 'I' numbers in this tree corresponded with the electronic number given to each individual in the original GED database file.

If you have corrections, updates, or biographical information that can be added to the tree please contact us. It would be useful if contributors could provide some information as to the authority of the source, for the record. Links to other family trees, particularly those of the female lines that lost the Bomford name, and to Bomford or related family websites or other relevant information on the internet would be most welcome. More specific dates of births, marriages and deaths would be most welcome, but we would like an assurance that living people have given consent to having more specific information about themselves published on this site.  As a rule, we will not put direct contact information onto this website, but are happy to include links to personal websites.

David Bomford in Adelaide, South Australia, is putting together a collection of pictures of Bomfords, old and new.  If you have any which you would be able to share, please send him an email.

A note on spelling. Spelling of names has generally followed that in Peter's database, though alternatives are occasionally given where they have been used in other versions of the family tree. To take one example, I0007 Mary Hiron has also been recorded as Maria Hyerne. There is a local family called Hirons, pronounced in the area 'Iyerns'. At this stage it is hard to tell which was the 'correct' spelling at the time. The name Heming is common in the tree, but is sometimes spelt with one m and sometimes with two. Peter Heming Bomford says, 'All the people I know who hold that name spell it with one m so I suggest using that. However, the original Hemming family used two ms. The single m version probably arose because of a convention by which a double letter used to be written as a single with a horizontal dash above.'

For a map of the area, you might go to Mulitmap.com and search for a map of Evesham at around 1:200,000 scale.

It has been said that between 1216-1272 Henry III gave lands to the Bomfords. The records of the College of Arms show there is a place called Bamford in Derbyshire; another Bamford originally Baumford which is old Norman French and would have been pronounced Bomford, near Bury, Lancashire. These lands were held by Thomas de Baumford.

The name has been spelt in different ways, Bamford, Bomford; Bumford. This was down to the scribe who would have written the names down at the time.

We have early records of other Bomfords living at Arrow and at White Ladies Aston, but cannot yet link them to the tree below.

The earliest identified Bomford from whom we can trace the living family is:

I0001 Thomas Bomford, b c1580, lived in Coughton, Warwickshire

He was a tenant farmer near Arrow, Warwick. He had two sons that we know of.

1a I0002 Thomas Bomford, of Arrow, b 1612, of whom below.

1b I0003 Laurence Bomford, b 1617, d 1720 at County Meath, Ireland, m 1650 I0006 Eleanor Chevenix, b 1633, d 1722. Laurence went to Ireland and started the Irish branch of the family.

Thomas and Laurence both fought for Oliver Cromwell at the battle of Worcester in 1651. Tradition has it that Oliver Cromwell called in at the farm house where the Bomfords lived on his way to Worcester on 22 August 1651, and there was entertained. The legend continues that he tethered his horse and sat under a yew tree, were he read his Bible. He went into the house were he is said to have written a letter. The farmhouse still survives to today as two dwellings.  Alternatively, I0935 Nicholas Bomford advises [email 7 Mar 2007] that Peter Bomford's father Christopher wrote to him in 1990: "The house ... at Wyre, used to be down the lane towards the Mill – when I first tried to find it, about 1938, I was told that it had been cleared away a few years before that. It had been a timber framed house with soft ‘wattle and daub’ fillings – similar to the oldest ones at Atch Lench – I should expect." Nicholas couldn't make the dates work and Christopher agreed no Bomfords were likely to have been at the house at the time of the battle, 1651. They hadn't yet moved from Arrow. The visit would have been on August 29 because J.W. Willis Bund reconstructed Cromwell's movements and where he stayed during the week he moved on Worcester, setting his troops, and that is the date he would have passed the house.  Alternatively, it might have been the Bomfords of White Ladies Aston who enjoyed Cromwell's company.

It is said that there were Bomfords living at Wyre or Wyre Piddle near Pershore. They were probably puritans and sympathetic with Parliament in the great struggle for Faith and Freedom in the 17th century.

The elder son, I0002 Thomas Bomford of Arrow, b 1612, stayed in the area. Thomas was probably a tenant farmer of the Earl of Coventry who lived at Croome Court. Thomas Coventry b 1629 d 1699 was known as the Hon Thomas Coventry from 1687 to 1697, when he was made Viscount Deerhurst and the 1st Earl of Coventry.  Thomas married and had two sons.

2a I0004 John Bomford of Arrow, b 1655, d Arrow m 1675 I0007 Mary Hiron (or Maria Hyerne), b 1645 and had issue. A special licence from the Bishop of Worcester was necessary for them to be married, but it is not known why. Perhaps John was 20, or perhaps banns hadn't been read.

5a I1274 John b c1728 (the father would have been 14 when his son was born if these dates are correct)

4b I1268 Hannah Bomford b c1704 (I0008 John Bomford, Hannah's father, would have been 18 when Hannah was born if this date is correct, and even younger when his first son, Hannah's elder brother I0010 John, was born.)

The house where Thomas lived in Wyre has now disappeared. He and Elizabeth were buried at Pershore Baptist Chapel, but the grave is lost. Early chapel records no longer exist. He might have been born about 1702. There is an IGI entry for the marriage of Thomas Bomford and Elizabeth Heming of Atch Lench on 24 May 1724, at Throckmorton. Elizabeth's parents had 'The Firs' farm at Atch Lench. As the only child, the farm passed to her and eventually to her son Heming. 'Mrs Heming' is recorded as having made a contribution to the funds of the Pershore Baptist Chapel in 1725. This is the earliest recorded instance of a family member making a financial contribution to the Baptist cause. She was probably Elizabeth's mother, widow of John Heming (d 1713), copyholder of the manor of Atch Lench, who lived at 'The Firs'. Elizabeth inherited the copyhold, which passed to her son Heming. Lords of the manor were the Dean and Chapter of Westminster Abbey.
