Achmuty family
(15) Arthur Auchmuty, eldest son of Captain John Achmuty of Newtownflood
Notes from Clare Eagle (emails Apr 2009)
Arthur Auchmuty XE "Auchmuty:Arthur" eldest son of Captain John Achmuty of Newtownflood and Isabella Stirling his wife. Disinherited.
Dublin pedigree [p. 301/518]: in which he is listed fifth, after his brother Forbes, “Arthur Auchmuty of Whithill, parish of Ardagh buried 16 Nov 1722 in old Church of Lisbrack M.I. m. Jane Bladwell buried 29 Jan 1710 in Old Church of Lisbrack”
Monumental Inscription, taken from a rubbing made May 1867 by J.D.R.Tyssen for W.A.T.Amhurst : “Here lyeth the body of Jane Aghmouty alias Bladwell wife of Arthur Aghmouty Esq of Whithill in the parisch and Barrony of Ardagh who departed this life January the 29th 1710. As alsoe the body of the aforesaid Arthur Aghmouty Esq who departed this life Nover the 16th Ano Domni MDCCXII [1712] vive memor le thi” [if d 1722 is correct, then this number is missing an X: read on!]
Thomas Gordon Auchmuty in 1828: p 32 or 33 “….this Arthur and his wife Jane Bladwell are buried in the old church of Lisbrack the monumental stone bears the arms of Auchmuty impaling Bladwell …”
Will of Arthur of Ballykenny 1697: (quoted on p. 1 above)
In this will the main beneficiary is Arthur’s grandson Thomas, [first] son of his [first] son Arthur of Brienstown. In default of Thomas the main beneficiary is to be another grandson Arthur [first son of Arthur's second son John], named as of Whithill on his gravestone.
Captain John, disinherits his son Arthur as a result of Arthur’s first marriage, but leaves small legacies to Arthur’s sons John and Arthur Gates Auchmuty: -
“To my grandson John Auchmuty eldest son of my late Son Arthur the Sume of five pounds to buy mourning To my grandson Arthur Gates Auchmuty the Sum of five pounds to buy mourning”. [This is evidence that the son, "my late son Arthur", had died before the father Captain John made his will in 1726; it is not evidence of disinheritance.]
Bessie Auchmuty quoted in TGA p 51: “His eldest son Arthur married very young and disobliged his father. He never forgave him and he disinherited him.”
Helena Forbes Auchmuty “Arthur the eldest son displeased his father by marrying at 17 a Cousin of his own a Miss Stirling I believe he never was forgiven notwithstanding his father was a most religious good man. He died young of the gout which he had before he was 17 leaving only one son John who never rose higher in the Army than a Quarter Master and was killed in Foreign Service leaving a daughter and two boys.”
Probate record:
[PROB6/89: While the date 'ulto Sep 1714' is not entirely clear here, the other records on the same original page are clearly 1714, which casts doubt on Arthur having d 1722, and rather tends to confirm MDCCXII, 1712. Whole thing is rather unclear as to its words and nature - is it a probate record? It may say 'Arthurus Auchmuty./ Inodorimo dio Em.+ Som.(??) . . . Anne Auchmuty (?)Widow of . . . Arthurus Auchmuty . . . New Town in Som [same word as first line and last line in image?] . . . Longford . . . '.]
Arthur married first Jane Bladwell
Monumental Inscription: “Here Lyeth the Body of Jane Aghmouty alias Bladwell wife of Arthur Aghmoouty Esq of Whithill in the parisch and Barrony of Ardagh who departed this life January the 29, 1710. As alsoe the Body of the aforesaid Arthur Aghmouty Esq who departed this life Nov’r the 16th An’o Dom’ni MDCCXII” [1712 - see above]
Arthur and Jane had a son: -
1. John Auchmuty of Newross, Co Waterford and of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Arthur married secondly Ann Gates
Boyd’s Marriage Index: “1709 Auchmuty, Ar. married Gates, An. London (St Magnus the Martyr), London”
Arthur and Ann had one son: -
1. Arthur Gates Auchmuty
Helena Forbes Auchmuty 'Arthur the eldest son displeased his father by marrying at 17 a Cousin of his own a Miss Stirling' (above). His mother was a Stirling so the cousin would be on his mother's side. As he m Jane Bladwell, the implication is that his mother Isabella Stirling had a sister who married a Bladwell and had dau Jane.
Burke 1847 https://www.google.com.au/books/edition/A_Genealogical_and_Heraldic_Dictionary_o/C8fTAAAAMAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1 entry for Thomas Gordon Achmuty (p. 2) says Arthur's line is extinct.
If Jane Bladwell 'departed this life January the 29, 1710', then Arthur was a bit previous in marrying Ann Gates in 1709. The marriage licence is dated 27 Jun 1709, and in it Arthur is described as 29 (possibly 24) years old, and a widower. Ann was 19 and an orphan:
