The Irish Bomfords
Irish Bomfords Family Photo Album
This photograph album, that was sold as part of the auction of the contents of the Bomford family house, Oakley Park, in 1955, recently became available (email 2 July 2022). Only a few of the photographs have names attached. From the mixture of Bomfords and Boltons, and the age of the photos, it seems likely the photo album belonged to John Francis Bomford and his wife, Elinor Jane Bolton (30.3).

The photo album: old and fragile
Photo 1. W.W. Winter, The Alexandra Rooms, Derby. Same dress as photo 35? Different photo studio, so probably coincidence.
Photo 3. Copied by London Photographic Company, Bayswater. Catherine Holman (email 12 Mar 2023) says, "I am wondering if photo 3 is of Samuel Bomford [20.1, 20.7, 26.3] as he has the same eyebrows as one that you already have [26.1] and it says London by the photo." Catherine added later on 12 Mar 2023, "I am not sure, the older chap in photo 3 could be of Samuel Winter B who left for Australia as he has the round face like the photo of him as a child. It is either of him or Samuel Bomford." On 16 Mar 2023 Catherine added, "That oldie chap I meant of course to write, Samuel Richard, not Winter. As it seems to be more of Eleanor Jane Bomford’s age or family." Samuel Richard Bomford (33.6) died aged 33, and didn't go to Australia - he went to South Africa. Perhaps Catherine means Samuel Richard Bomford's uncle, George Winter Bomford (30.2), brother of Elinor Jane Bomford's husband John Francis Bomford. George Winter Bomford did go to Australia. He died aged 50 in 1884. As John Francis' brother, it would make sense for him to be in this family photo album.
Photo 4. Lorna Julyan (email 19 Mar 2023) thinks this is John Stephen Bomford (33.3), based on a photo she has of John Stephen Bomford taken when he was a little older (that photo is at 33.3).
Photo 5. E.C Porter, Ealing. Catherine Holman (email 12 Mar 2023) says, "The chap in 5 surely must be the same Bolton chap as in 21."
Photo 6. Robinson & Sons, Grafton St, Dublin. "Lyndon, 1st Feb 1871". Probably George Lyndon Bomford, b 29 September 1867 (35.1).
Photo 7. James Robinson, Grafton St, Dublin. "For ?????? Bolton". Possibly "For James Bolton"??
Photo 9. Robinson & Sons, Grafton St, Dublin. "Sam 15th December 1873". Could be Samuel Richard Bomford, b 15 Dec 1873 in Drumlargan (33.6). Unless the photo is of a girl, in which case we will need to think again.
Photo 10. A. Seaman, Chesterfield
Photo 11. London Stereoscopic Company. "Evely W W Barnes, Aug 1st 82". A Barnes family is outlined at 25.2.2. George Stanculescu comments (email 12 Mar 2023): "No. 11 - Evelyn [Mary] Barnes (1858-1951), the daughter of the elder brother of Elinor Jane Bolton, Rev. Richard Knott Bolton. The photo seems to have been taken just after her marriage with Edmund Barnes, attorney in law, in 1881." See photos of Barnes children, #35, #87.
Photo 12. Frances Jane Bomford, nee Winter (26.2.1)
Photo 13. Anatole Magrin. George Stanculescu comments (email 12 Mar 2023): "No. 13 and no. 55 have Anatole Magrin as author-photographer, I suppose. This was a very reputed French photographer in Kustendjie (Constantza), to-day in Romania, and a good friend of Aby Bolton. No. 13 seems to be his first born boy from his 2nd marriage, Aby Bourne Corner Bolton (1880-1922), who lived enough to fight in Mesopotamia in the First World War for Britain, and died in 1922, without issue. He was born in 1880 and the photo could be dated 1881."
Photo 14. Rockwood, 17 Union Square.
Photo 15. L. Werner, 15 Leinster St. Dublin. Catherine Holman (email 12 Mar 2023) says, "Number 15 is the one I thought was of Lyndon Henry Bomford (33.4) but now wonder if it is of my grandfather [George Lyndon Bomford, 35.1]. It is definitely of him or one of his brothers, ruling out Charlie Bomford [Charles Francis Bomford, 33.8]." On 13 March Catherine added, "I am 70% certain that 15 is of my grandfather."
Photo 17. W.W. Winter, The Alexandra Rooms, Derby.
Photo 18. W. Andrews, Lichfield.
Photo 19. Notman & Campbell, Boston.
Photo 20. A. Seaman, Chesterfield.
Photo 21. Fratelli Vianelli, Italy. "To George Lyndon Bomford from his affectionate uncle William Bolton". George Stanculescu comments (email 12 Mar 2023): "No. 21 & No. 58 I think are from William Bolton (1846-1882) the youngest brother of Elinor Jane Bomford and Aby Bolton. I knew that he [William] died in London from illnesses contracted in East China. Thus No. 58 was taken in Japan before 1880. He was a MD as well." See also #5 above.
Photo 22. Lafayette, 30 Westmoreland St Dublin.
Photo 24. "M. Bosanquet, 63 Patrick Street Cork". That is the photographer, not the subject.
Photo 25. Robinson & Sons, Grafton St, Dublin. Catherine Holman (email 12 Mar 2023) says, "The little girl no 25 looks so like my aunt Evelyn [Evelyn Maude Bomford, 35.6] who must have had photos taken of her as her older sister [Elinor Louise Bomford 35.5.1] died so young." On 13 March Catherine added, "I now believe 25 is that of Elinor May Bomford (33.5) not Evelyn as most of the photos seem to be of that gen"
Photo 26. L. Werner, 15 Leinster St. Dublin.
Photo 27. Slade, High St, Cheltenham.
Photo 28. L. Werner, 15 Leinster St. Dublin.
Photo 29. W.S Bradshaw, Newgate St. "To my dear little pupils, with love, July 1879". Presume this is a photo of their governess.
Photo 31. Brading & Co, High St, Newport.
Photo 33. Lauder Brothers, Westmoreland St, Dublin.
Photo 35. W.D. Brigham, Scarborough. "Richard Barnes, Evelyn's child". May be related to photo 11 above. Compare dress with photo 1. George Stanculescu comments (email 12 Mar 2023): "No. 35 - Richard [Langley] Barnes, later on a Reverend, who was the son of the aforementioned Evelyn [photo 11 above] and was born in 1894. The photo should have been taken at the very end of the XIXth century." See also photo 87.
Photo 36. Cundall, Downes & Co. New Bond St, London.
Photo 37. J. Angermann, Braila, Romania. "For my dearest sister Nellie from her loving brother Aby, Kustendjie. Black Sea, 16.10.78". Kustendjie is now known as Constantza. Aby is probably Abraham Irwin Bolton. Nellie is probably his sister Elinor Jane Bolton who married John Francis Bomford (30.3.1). Abraham also had a daughter Elinor Jane whom he called Nellie. She died in 1891 aged 8 during a diphtheric scarlet fever epidemic in Constantza.
Photo 38. G. Schroeder, 28, Grafton St, Dublin.
Photo 39. C. Silvy, 38 Porchester Terrace, Bayswater.
Photo 40. G.E. Alder, Promenade Villas, Cheltenham.
Photo 41. Chancellor, 55 Lr Sackville St, Dublin.
Photo 42. F.H. Mares, 79, Grafton St, Dublin.
Photo 44. Chancellor, 55 Lr Sackville St, Dublin.
Photo 45. Slade, High St, Cheltenham.
Photo 47. "26 Temple St". Arbella Bomford had a house at 21 Temple St in 1815 (18.9.3) (i.e. much earlier than the likely date of this photo). 20.6.5 says that her sons George and Samuel Bomford left Temple St for Agher in 1815. Her will requested that her maid Margaret Curry continue to look after the boys (18.9.4).
Photo 48. Nelson & Marshall, 11 Upper Sackville St. Dublin.
Photo 49. Chancellor, 55 Lr Sackville St, Dublin.
Photo 50. G. Schroeder, 28, Grafton St, Dublin.
Photo 51. Herbert Watkins, Regent St. London.
Photo 52. J Bateman, St. George’s S, Canterbury.
Photo 53. Thomas North, 71 Grafton St, Dublin. Catherine Holman (email 12 Mar 2023) says "I believe I recognise one lady as Phil and I met her when mum took us to Ferrans. It is number 53 of Hillda North-Bomford [Hilda Frances Munn, 28.6] who is wearing the clothes and hat that I remember seeing her wear". Thomas North photographer of Dublin has quite a few relations, but is not placed in the Norths of Ireland family tree so may or may not be a relative.
Photo 54. W.D. Brigham, Scarborough.
Photo 55. Anatole Magrin. George Stanculescu comments (email 12 Mar 2023): "No. 13 and no. 55 have Anatole Magrin as author-photographer, I suppose. This was a very reputed French photographer in Kustendjie (Constantza), today in Romania, and a good friend of Aby Bolton. No. 13 seems to be his first born boy from his 2nd marriage, Aby Bourne Corner Bolton (1880-1922), who lived enough to fight in Mesopotamia in the First World War for Britain, and died in 1922, without issue. He was born in 1880 and the photo could be dated 1881. No. 55 could show the first three children of Aby Bolton's second wife (from left to right): Aby Bourne Corner, Terezina Arpalice Emily Beda (1882-1891), and Eleanor Jane (1883-1891). Behind could have been the second wife of Aby Bolton, Terezina Corner (d. 1891). The date of this photo could be around 1884. The two girls sadly and their mother died in the terrible epidemic you know about [1891 scarlet fever epidemic in Constantza]." See George's article about Aby Bolton.
Photo 56. W.D. Brigham, Scarborough.
Photo 57. Seaman & Sons, Chesterfield & Ilkeston. "Lyndon, Noel and Evelyn Morris" (30.3.2). George Stanculescu comments (email 12 Mar 2023): "No. 57 the first three children of Josephine Anne Bolton (1860-1924) the second daughter of Richard Knott Bolton (brother of Elinor Jane Bolton), who married the Rev. Ernest Edwin Morris: Evelyn Mary (1887-1980), Noel Meeson (1892-1977) and Lyndon Henry Morris (1899-1946). The photo should have been taken at the beginning of the XXth century.
Photo 58. F Beato & Co, Japan. "William Bolton". He was a MD as well."
Photo 59. Chancellor, 55 Lr Sackville St, Dublin.
Photo 60. A.D. Roche, 29 Patrick St. Cork. "Geraldine Bolton" "John's". Geraldine is Geraldine Frances Orpen Hungerford, wife of Abraham Irwin Bolton. "John" is probably John Francis Bomford (30.3.1), who married Abraham Irwin Bolton's sister Elinor Bolton.
Photo 61. Parish & Co, 122 Hollis St, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. "For dear Eleanor from Aby". Aby is Abraham Irwin Bolton, and Eleanor is his sister who married John Francis Bomford (30.3.1). George Stanculescu comments (email 12 Mar 2023): "No. 61 could have been taken during his [Aby's] first marriage wedding trip (1866) and the Geraldine Orpen's one as well (no. 60). She died in 1879. Aby Bolton's photo you have so kindly sent me now [#61] is the earliest I have. He should have been 28 years old. I have attached herewith a photo dated probably 1868-1869, in a Romanian Danube port, with the officers of HMS Cockatrice (please see his "mutton chop" like beard a la Franz Joseph). Later on he adopted moustaches and beard a la Napoleon the 3rd. And during his old age he kept only big long moustaches."

Photo 66. Louis De Mauny, 374 Euston Road, London. George Stanculescu (email 16 Mar 2023) says "No. 66 could be again William Bolton (1846-1882), the youngest brother of Elinor Bomford, meaning the photo could have been taken before his illness and death in London on July 11, 1882". See #21 and #58 above.

Photo 82. M. Wane, Prospect Hill, Douglas, Isle of Man.
Photo 83. L. Werner, 15 Leinster St, Dublin. George Stanculescu (email 16 Mar 2023) says, "No. 83 is definitely Rev. Lyndon Henry Bolton (1801-1869) the very father of Elinor, Aby Bolton and William Bolton (and other Bolton brothers and sisters). The photo could have been taken after his nomination as Rector of Drumcondra, Co. Meath (around 1862)."

Photo 89. Lafayette, 30 Westmoreland St, Dublin.
Photo 90. Anatole Magrin, Constantz. George Stanculescu (email 16 Mar 2023) says, "No. 90 could be Thomas Francis Bolton (1890-1930), born March 16, 1890, the youngest child of Aby Bolton by Terezina Corner, Aby's second wife. The photo was taken in the Romanian town of Constantza, main Black Sea port, and could be dated 1890-1891, just before the family tragedy when Aby Bolton lost, within three weeks (between March 27 and April 15), his dear second wife together with three of his little daughters, during a terrible Diphteric Scarlatine Epidemic."
