Auchmuty family
Also spelt Achmuty, Ahmuty, Aghmuty, A'hmuty, Ahmuti, Ahmutty, Aughmughty or just plain Mooty.
This page is a table of contents to rather a lot of Achmuty family information. Most of it came to me from Judith Mala of Queensland, who amassed two large boxes of documents and passed them to me for safe keeping in 2021 (Martha email 23 Aug 2021). There were no computer files for any of the material, only paper copies.
Some of the information is typed and I have scanned it and made it available here in 2025 (mostly as pdf files with optical text recognition, quality varies). Other information is photocopies of hand written documents (wills, deeds, registers etc) and photocopies of printed documents (books, magazines, newspapers) which I will not reproduce here (quite likely, and in some cases certainly, the images, if not the words, are copyright), but contact us if you need a copy of it for personal use. Where I have found them, I've included links to online versions of printed documents. Some documents are transcripts of documents copied from old registries, archives, books, magazines etc with the image (which is modern) subject to copyright but the content (the original words) out of copyright.
I have not sought to reproduce information taken from the readily available resources of ancestry.com and familysearch.org, but some may have crept in.
The materials do not seem to be in any particular order, and at times are disjointed or repetitious; at other times the research has gone down deep rabbit holes. The site search function may be useful. Nor is there any family tree which links all the various resources together - a task for someone with an Auchmuty interest. Karen Mooty put together a vast Achmuty tree in the early 2000s. That has been reformatted into a single page html Auchmuty tree, which is being added to and populated (as at Jun 2025) with links to the information below, and information from Clare Eagle (emails Apr 2009). The tree retains Karen's numbering system (a number in brackets unique to each individual in the tree). Those numbers have also been added to some individuals in the page below to assist with cross referencing.
A website called Ahmuty Connections (in two parts: Part 1; Part 2) covers much the same ground, is all plain text and somewhat organised. It has more detail in some places, less in others.
See also The Auchmuty Family of Scotland and America by Annette Townsend, Grafton Press, New York, 1932, 215pp (full text at https://archive.org/details/auchmutyfamilyof00town/page/n9/mode/2up).
One old reference is an Auchmuty pedigree in the National Library of Ireland: https://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000530996, Registered Pedigrees Vol. 25 [ca. 1862-1872], images 299 of 518 to 317 of 518.
As the originator of transcriptions of old documents etc has generally not been acknowledged either in the material I have been given or in other instances of it on the internet, I am usually unable to attribute work to its authors and cannot tell who has copied who. I apologise for any copyright transgressions. Where I have found originals of substantial quoted material published elsewhere on the web, I have generally put in a link to the relevant site rather than reproducing it here. Please contact us if you find broken links.
Finally, apologies for spelling mistakes. Is it Wallcot or Walcott? I've generally no reliable way of telling and the spelling checker doesn't help.

[Compare this list with typewritten list of parish records. 'Olivia' in that list seems more likely to be Alicia (1026), who is named in the will of her brother Thomas Arthur Staples Auchmuty (86) - there is no 'Olivia' in the will. Those marked * are among those listed in Howell v Ahmuty (p.8) in 1804 as the six children of Thomas Ahmuty and Mary Staples who had attained the age of 21. There may have been other children between the marriage in 1765 and birth of Margaret in 1769 - given the rate at which children were born after that - pretty much annually. ]

14. Email 13 Oct 2001 from Pam to Val re Sir Major General Vincent Eyre b 1811 m 1833 Emily Ahmuty Monat b 1815 - 'very infuriating to find an actual Ahmuty and not be able to place her in the scheme of things'. A search on Family Search in 2025 finds https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGFB-MYF?lang=en - Emily Ahmuty Mowat m Vincent Eyre in Bengal 6 Sep 1833; also Mouat]. A search for Ahmuty Eyre finds her burial record: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6TSF-X2RX?lang=en. Following that record back to its source gets you to https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/265042763/emily-ahmuty-eyre, which says 'Emily Ahmuty Mouat was born on 4 June 1816 to Colonel James Mouat and Wilhelmina Mouat. She was the first wife of Major General Vincent Eyre (married 6 September 1833) and died on 9 March 1851 in Calcutta. It lists their children as Colonel Frederick Vincent Eyre 1835-1917, Edward Onslow Eyre 1847-1855, and Lieutenant Colonel Vincent George Lawrence Eyre 1848-1927 (there were others: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mouat-279). There is no photo, so spelling not confirmed: but see also her husband's reported grave inscription. There is also a James Aubrey Mouat b 21 Apr 1811 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGSY-F32?lang=en): one wonders if he is also an Ahmuty (rather than 'Anburey'); and a George Mouat b 1 Feb 1813 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6VYS-MKB1?lang=en). Re James the father, there is a Scottish marriage record Meyer Jas Mowat and Wilhelmina Mouat, 5 Sep 1809 (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2HR-4DTY?lang=en) which is right date and right names: if the different spelling of the surnames is correct, then they weren't closely related and it might explain why both spellings are used subsequently. For more on James and Wilhelmina, see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Mouat-280. A James L Mouat, b 1846, died in Seattle USA on 9 May 1926: his death record lists his father as James Mouat and his mother as Wilhelmina Burgess (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N3P7-C5V?lang=en): the coincidence of names is striking but the dates don't fit for him to have been Emily Ahmuty Mouat's brother, so that is almost certainly a different Wilhelmina.
15. The 13 October 2001 email has a 2pp attachment with tree of John Eyre of Eyre Court 1623-1685 m Mary Bigoe (no source stated), that refers to a 'Mystery Eyre' who m Thomas Achmuty (21) son of Thomas Achmuty (5) and Dorcas Townley and had issue. Searching around for that in 2025 didn't find anything directly relevant, but did find Thomas Auchmuty (557) m Elizabeth Jane Brady in Limerick 22 Sep 1904: https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/view/?record_id=99668cf754-863195; https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/marriage_returns/marriages_1904/10210/5716672.pdf. From the latter, Thomas' father James Auchmuty (346) was a farmer; Elizabeth's father James Brady a clerk & ex sergeant (RUC?). They were married by James W Auchmuty (558). There is a bit more info under Elizabeth's entry at https://www.myheritage.com/names/elizabeth_auchmuty.
