The Irish Bomfords

Based on Karen Mooty's tree at https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/m/o/o/Karen-Mooty-CO/GENE1-0001.html (as at May 2025). There have been some substantive changes e.g. moving a person from being a son to being a brother. Some remaining difficult points (e.g. people apparently getting married at age 3, or after they have died) are highlighted in yellow.

The tree has been added to from Judith's Mala's research and with notes from Clare Eagle and others linked to some entries. Some of those additions are documented; others are not (so check the notes and take with a grain of salt), but they too have been included as more likely to be helpful than a blank sheet. It is a work in progress. Contact us if you have something to add or clarify.

Abbreviations: d is died, b is born, m is married, dum is died unmarried, dsp is died without progeny (decessit sine prole), c is circa (about), co is county, dau is daughter, lic is licence (as in marriage licence - ML), q is quarter, q.v. is 'see' or 'refer to', and the number in brackets is the number the person has in the Karen Mooty tree (numbers 1000 and up are for people not in Karen's tree, currently up to 1121). TGA is Thomas Gordon Ahmuty (162), who left an oral history in 1828: Clare Eagle's notes include quotes from it (and other oral histories), but so far sources of them have not been identified on-line or in library catalogues or anywhere else.

Auchmuty is also spelt Achmuty, Ahmuty, Aghmuty, A'hmuty, Ahmuti, Ahmutty, Auchmouty, Aughmughty, Auchmutey, Ackmuty or just plain Mooty. In this tree, whatever spelling was used in the source is maintained, so if searching for 'Arthur Auchmuty'  suggest you try 'Arthur A' to get most of the variants.

In 1746 he went to India aged 19 as a stowaway or cabin boy and free merchant,  Mayor of Calcutta in 1763, returned to England 1766 with fortune, director Honourable East lndia Company 1769-83, chairman 1782, MP for Maidstone, MP for Rochester (notes on Maria; notes & notes on Robert; Box 2 packet 1 #1 & #2; his will) [Given her birth date, pretty much confirmed by her death date and birth dates of her children, Maria is of the 5th generation, not the 6th as shown in the Karen Mooty tree; so not a dau of Arthur (56) b 1729 and Ursula de Cruz; supposedly she is a 'dau of Arthur Auchmuty of Briansford, Co Longford' (Burke) as well as 'dau of an East India Company official', and m in India, but no Arthurs fit that bill - of Brianstown, in India, and the right age; Arthur (1) is much too old; Arthur Auchmuty (15) wasn't an East India Company official and d in 1712; Dr Arthur Auchmuty (23), m Mary Lawder never went to India as far as I can tell. Arthur Forbes Auchmuty (79) was an East India Company official, but he was b 1742, 8 years after Maria was b, so could be Maria's brother but not her father: Arthur Forbes Auchmuty's father was John Auchmuty (35) and there is no evidence so far that John went to India, and there is no mention of a dau Maria in John's 1850 will (or in Arthur's 1780 will, which mentions his sister Catherine Gibson - though Maria was long dead by then). There is a connection between Maria and Arthur Forbes Auchmuty though: in his will Arthur Forbes Auchmuty named Robert Gregory (can we assume him to be Maria's husband, b 1727 so aged 53 in 1780?) as his executor and guardian to his sons. Could it be that rather than a dau, she is a sister to an Arthur, East India Company official - either Arthur Forbes (79) or Arthur (56) m Ursula de Cruz? Arthur (56) also had a Robert Gregory connection: "Arthur [(56)] 2nd son of S.A. and Mary King went to the care of Robert Gregory his mother’s cousin for whom a subscription had been made some years before by his relatives to send him to India" (notes). For now Maria has been moved up one generation, but left with Arthur (56) as per Karen Mooty tree. To be resolved]

James (78) the father 'b c1746' would have been 15 in 1761 when the son was born. Notes say James (78) left a widow and one daughter, no son mentioned: so this John (142) seems to be in the wrong place.]

4c James Auchmuty (1072), 'formerly deputy surveyor Port of Galway', named as 'my cousin James Auchmuty' in her will by Isabella Auchmuty (29). She separately names another 'cousin James Auchmuty [34], youngest son of my Uncle Robert', so this one can only be a son of Arthur Achmuty (15), Forbes Auchmuty (13) or Richard Auchmuty (14). As far as we know the latter two had no issue, so for now the second 'cousin James Auchmuty' has been parked here.

3b Rev James Auchmuty (11), b 1681 in Castle Forbes, Longfordshire, Ireland, d 3 May 1753, bur in the Old Church of Newtownfforbes, entered Trinity 1695 aged 15, Dean of Armagh, m(1) Elizabeth Clarke or Elizabeth Clark (said to be dau of Elizabeth Clarke widow who m James' brother Robert at about the same time), b c1668 [that date would work better for the widow - certainly not for a 'died very young' wife: the 1668 dates comes from Karen Mooty's tree] in Castle Forbes, Longfordshire, Ireland, ('a delicate nice young woman, she [James' wife] died very young of a decline at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, leaving him [James] two daughters and a son, infants') (notes; more notes)

4a Elizabeth Auchmuty (26), b c1721 in Armagh, Ireland, m in Armagh, Ireland c 2 Dec 1747, Francis Savage, b c1717 in Dublin, Ireland, d 1770. Indenture of 2 Dec 1740 between James Auchmuty Dean of Armagh and Francis Savage, transfer of the town and lands of Aghaga (141 acres) and Killnecarrow (124 acres), Smear (295 acres) and Crott or Crutt (262 acres, all plantation measure) all in co Longford, for ever for a consideration of £1,000, absolutely void if £1,000 repaid by 3 Mar next [i.e. a mortgage] (Wilts and Swindon RO ref 1040/101) (see 8.1.1 concerning an 1838 lease by Rev James Achmuty of the same lands to Charles Hamilton)

5a Robert Savage (58), b c1748 in Knockadoo, Sligo, Ireland, m(1) in Knockadoo, Sligo, Ireland, Isabella Gordon, b 1720, d 1777 (notes, p. 2) [Isabella was the widow of Thomas Auchmuty (51), d 1762, who she had m in 1750 or 1753; notes say of Samuel (94), son of Isabella and Thomas (51), 'Born 30 Nov 1756, his father died when he was age 6, his mother married secondly Robert Savage when he was 10' i.e. Thomas (51) d 1762, and Isabella m(2) Robert Savage c1766. Robert would have been about 18, she about 46, with 10 year old Samuel in tow, when they married, so it was a pretty odd marriage]

5a Robert Savage (58), b c1748, m(2) c1778 (Karen Mooty date for Robert's m to Isabella Gordon, fits with birth dates for the children) Margaret Evans, b c1752 in Knockadoo, Sligo, Ireland. [In Karen Mooty tree and elsewhere these children are said to be children of Isabella Gordon (notes): but they would have been b 13 years after Isabella's second marriage, when she was about 60, and after her death in 1777. So working hypothesis is that Robert m Margaret Evans after Isabella Gordon d 1777, and that the children are children of Margaret Evans. Margaret would have been about 25 and Robert about 30 when they married]

If the latter, so that only Mary Louise (28) is the child of Judith Louisa Delabone, then Henry (1068) and Henrietta (1067) are mysteries]
